I saw this from both sides. Working as a consultant, I learned how dozens of schools and organizations actually operate: the shared patterns, yes, but also how much each one differs beneath the surface. Then I went back into a school environment full-time, and that contrast sharpened into a conviction: each institution’s challenges and requirements are genuinely specific.
The moment it crystallized was a vendor pitch for an add-on product. It would have done maybe 70% of what we needed and charged us tens of thousands of dollars a year for the privilege, on top of forcing us to change how we worked.
I realized I could build exactly what we needed, to our exact specifications. Whether engineering an academic advising degree audit, building a custom professional development tracker, or streamlining curriculum mapping and narrative grading rubrics, the true value was in understanding our operational blueprint. Modern tools and my background in business analysis meant I knew how to engineer it rapidly without the bloat.
